Creating the Perfect Water Feature

This should have been so simple! Unfortunately, my bipeds’ ideas of a perfect water feature were very different from mine. The bipeds got a very large barrel that had been cut into two halves. They set the two halves in the garden and made sure they were standing level and filled them with water. This was all that was necessary, we now had two large drinking bowls outside – perfection!

But they hadn’t finished. They had a whole load of plants and some pots with holes in. They put the plants in the pots and arranged the pots inside the barrels. They also had some floating plants. It took them ages to do and when they’d finished, this was their idea of perfection!

How do I get to the water?

I’m sure you can all see the big flaw in their thinking – I couldn’t drink from the barrel. I set about putting things right as soon as their attention was elsewhere. It was easy to lift most of the plants out, their pots mostly came out with them. I placed the plants on the ground near the barrel. The bipeds saw what I’d done and came and told me that I mustn’t do that and they put all the plants back again!

Well, as you can imagine, I wasn’t going to give in that easily! I removed the plants at every opportunity and they put them straight back again. I was very determined, but they were very stubborn. I think they prefer to say that I was stubborn and they were determined, but I’m not going to quibble over semantics.

I was beginning to think we were doomed to keep repeating this for a very long time, when I went outside and discovered that things had changed slightly. The plants in one of the barrels were all grouped to one side, close together. I tried to remove the plants, but I couldn’t lift them. I was still quite young, only four months old. I went across to the other barrel and tossed all the plants out and had a drink.

The bipeds picked up all the plants and, instead of putting all the pots back in, they replanted them in one big pot. They put this pot in the barrel and they put some rocks on top of it, between the plants. No wonder the plants in the other barrel wouldn’t move easily!

I tried a few times, during the next week or so, to move the plants from the barrels – I wasn’t very successful. I decided it was time to compromise, after all, they had made it possible for me to drink from the barrels and the plants only added to the flavour! So from then on, I tried my best not to disturb the few plants that were left. This seemed to keep the bipeds happy and meant that I had two Clowie-sized drinking bowls to choose from in the garden and I always say that you can never have too many places to get a cooling drink of water!

See you next Wednesday!

  1. So glad that you figured out the best way to share the barrels! Smart Clowie. 🙂

  2. Full marks for persistence – we haven’t got a water feature any more. We did have a swimming pool which I could not drink from and did not enjoy falling into so I’m glad it’s gone. A water feature though, that sounds good. Might mention that to Beloved 🙂

  3. Hi Clowie, my mom read this and… I’m afraid a new DIY-project is born…OMD!

  4. Well, your drinking barrels certainly looked beautiful at the beginning – well done bipeds.

    Clowie, you clever dog, you!

  6. That water feature did look great Clowie..but how selfish of them, not puttin a Clowie barrel out..At least you got half of yor way in the end 🙂 Have a great Wednesday xxooxx

  7. Clowie, we’re thinking that you could have your own horticultural blog. You have such good ideas but the biped finishing does let you down. Keep it theoretical and you won’t be disappointed 😉

    • Great idea! Bipeds always have to make things much more complicated than they need to be! It makes it difficult to work with them.

  8. Well, I think your idea was better, it was low maintenance, you just wanted a place to drink and splash once in awhile lol

  9. Compromise is good. Such a shame humans take so long to catch on!

  10. The plant barrels are very pretty, but I know what you mean. A barrel of plain water would be much prettier. Personally, I rarely drink water and I’m usually afraid of anything new outside, so either way would be fine with me. If I wasn’t afraid, I’d try to eat the flowers.

  11. Well good for you Clowie in “agreeing” to compromise with the water feature! It looks quite lovely and you STILL get to have a slurp of water when you want one…..it’s a “win/win” !! 😀 😀

  12. Clowie you had us in stitches. We could just picture the plants going in and out etc etc. Have a wonderful Wednesday.
    Best wishes Molly

  13. Glad you guys found a good compromise!! They’re awesome drinking bowls!! Mum keeps asking Dad if I can have a Waterfall to drink from in the garden – I’d love that – but so far no waterfall has appeared – sigh!! 🙂

    I hope you’re having a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

  14. LOL, Clowie! Us, cuddly thingies, we’re always so much smarter than those bipeds, eh… 🙂 Great story, as always!

  15. Clowie you are such a CLEVER DOGGY!!!! BOL!!! This soooo made me laugh!

  16. Clowie has a career as a landscape artist!

  17. Nice work Clowie! We agree that there can never be too many drinking bowls around. You are very good at dealing with flowers, grass and gardens!

  18. Clowie… I think you simply loved taking all those plants out and watching your bipeds put them all back! I mean…how entertaining and rewarding for you! I’m sure you pulled them all out much more efficiently than your bipeds were able to put them back, after all they were your drinking bowls!!

    • I was much faster at pulling them out than they were at putting them back. It didn’t take me long to toss the plants out! It was silly putting them in my way like that.

      • Yes…lol…I should think you were bionic!! I’m sure you tossed them out in the blink of an eye and had the time of your life doing so too! They were slightly silly bipeds though I must agree 😉 You’d think they’d know better than to clog up your water bowls like that! But clowie…what a wonderful game! I must try it myself! What fun!! 🙂

        • I think you would enjoy it! If you take a plant and pull and then give a sharp flick as you release it, it’s quite surprising how far it will fly through the air. Once you’ve had a couple of attempts, we could have a contest!

          • OOOhhhhhh what fun! I’m sure I could make a plant go for flying for miles and miles and miles!!! I’d love to test out my flicking skills…I think they’d be very good and your bipeds would have such fun running here, there and everywhere trying to keep up with all the flying plants! A contest would be wonderful. Imagine how busy your bipeds would be too 😉 I will lots of practice before hand tho…you’ve had plenty already but maybe we could hit your bipeds over the head a few times with flicked plants! That’d slow them down a bit and make it even more fun!!

          • It would help their fitness levels in preparation for the Galactic Olympics! I’m sure our little contest will be great fun.

  19. Aah, the art of compromise. Well done Clowie and Humans!
