Gardening Part 1 – Digging my way to Oz

I really enjoy a spot of gardening. I started as a fairly young puppy. I pulled up a few small plants and placed them where they would look better. This wasn’t entirely successful, the bipeds kept stopping me and putting the plants back where they had been. And the plants often died! I thought that perhaps the plants were too small to be moved and, as I grew bigger and stronger, I moved onto larger plants – the bipeds call them shrubs.

These plants called shrubs were much harder to move, but it was a really satisfying feeling when, after a few minutes of tugging and shaking, the roots pulled out of the ground. They also made a lot more impact than the smaller plants when I placed them carefully in the spot I had planned for them.

I also enjoyed digging artistic holes in what they call the flowerbeds. The only problem was that they hardly left me alone for a moment in the garden and they always stopped me from digging and moving plants. They eventually convinced me that they had the flowerbeds the way they like them and that I shouldn’t dig in them or move the plants. This didn’t really leave me much scope for my talents. It’s so hard to be creative, there are always obstacles to overcome. I considered my options and turned my attention to the lawn.

Digging in the lawn

A very small hole in the lawn

I was glad I was now bigger and stronger because the ground was much harder in the lawn than in the flowerbeds. I found that if I scraped away a little grass I could get my paws into the ground and make a hole. One of the bipeds appeared and distracted me with a toy. A little while later when I remembered that I had been busy, I discovered that my work had been undone. It had been filled in and smoothed over. Luckily, it was only the work of a moment to restore it, as the ground was much softer than it had been before. I enlarged it a little and moved on to create another.

Every time the bipeds saw me doing my work, they would distract me. It was really nice that they wanted to play games with me, but progress on my project wasn’t as fast as I would have liked. I was quite pleased with the overall effect, even though a mysterious creature kept filling in my work when I wasn’t looking. I was a little puzzled by the bipeds stopping me so often – I almost began to wonder if they didn’t like the results, but that just couldn’t be!

One evening soon after that, I was comfortably dozing when I heard them mention my name. They were talking about my digging. I heard one of them say I was very determined to do it and that I’d turned the lawn into a rabbit warren – praise indeed! I was thrilled that they liked it so much and I dozed off again, dreaming of how it would look when I’d finished it.

As it happens, I never did complete that project and the lawn returned to its boring state. This was because I moved onto something even more exciting  – but I’ll tell you about that another time.

See you next Wednesday!

  1. Good on you Clowie! And I am waiting with tail wagging in OZ for when you make it. I am not allowed to dig either, in fact Beloved’s beloved doesn’t even like me walking on the flower beds, but I go behind one of the big trees and then he doesn’t notice where I walk!

  2. Stan does not like to dig – odd for a terrier… I had to teach him by hiding treats in soft earth but he was not keen. I don’t want him to dig up the garden so may not let him read this one. 🙂

  3. Clowie,

We are amazed at your gardening skills. Those shrubs are quite wholesome! We share your desire to dig holes. The humans are always trying to bribe us with treats when we go to work. Talk to you soon.

  4. I loved that cos I luvs gardening too 🙂 When I go into the garden, all I hear is my Humom shouting, ” OFF, OFF, OFF OFF” every time I go near the flowers, the shrubs the plant pots! Can’t wait to read part 2. Have I really gotta wait till next Wednesday!! 🙂 Oh, Clowie, Humom was up all night trying ( Very trying ) to do a subscribe button. Check it out when yooos pop over and let me noose if it works. 🙂
Big Hugs to my biggest Furriend Mollie x

    • If I had a treat for every time I’ve heard the word “off”, I’d need a lot of exercise to keep in shape.
I will give your new button a try soon – I was wondering why I couldn’t follow in the usual WordPress way!

      • Hay Clowie, come n enter Alfies competition, it ends on Wednesday. You can win a prize, posted to your door. Coool 🙂 Hope digging part 2 is coming weds 🙂

        • Hi, it’s nice to see you. I’m going out soon, but I’ve been thinking about your competition and I will try my luck tomorrow!

  5. You would think your people would like a little help in the garden. Sheesh

  6. Dig dig dig dig – we love it – Lulu Belle and Sofie Bear

  7. You go Clowie! I think the treats and games are them rewarding you for doing such a great job.

  8. You surely have an eye for landscaping, Doggy doesn’t which is good cuz we don’t have a lawn or garden.

  9. Oh Clowie you are delightful! Shame on the bipeds for not appreciating your hard work and effort!
I can hardly wait to see what you moved on to….I have a feeling it might pertain to the INSIDE of your house?
Barks and licks and love, Dakota

    • Thank you Dakota, I have done a few makeovers indoors, but I plan to tell you about an even more exciting project outdoors.

  10. Our Mummy doesn’t like us digging either. Our favourite trick at the moment is to dig our noses through the hay and bedding until whee are covered in it. Then whee flick our heads and bounce sending hay flying out of the cage and all over the living room.

For some reason Mummy doesn’t like our redecorating and complains about it.

    Whee are so misunderstood!! 😉

  11. well Clowie..what a landscape artist you are! And now, I hate to say this, but My Mom is taking the Bipeds side…she says…(and I had no way to stop her)…put Clowie’s own poop in the places she digs, she won’t go back…trust us…we did that with 6 Sibe puppies and it worked like a charm…all our Sibe breeder pals taught us this trick…OK…Savvy back again…CLowie…you dig furriend!! you dig!! and I am sure your landscape design will come out great! just sayin….

    • Well, one of my bipeds has just said that your mum might have been very useful to know when I was still a naughty puppy – how rude!
Savannah, I’m glad you appreciate my talents!

  12. I have my own gardening story which I can share……

I had a big hole which I had dug just near the rockery, I had been working on it for ages and hadn’t gotten into too much trouble as, although stopped every time I tried to increase the size, i had only chosen this and one other place in the garden to dig and both were out of the way, and no plants were harmed in the whole digging!

So we all lived very happily for some years in fact, until last weekend when I went out to my garden to discover that the two legs had found a use for my whole – it now contains a rather large tree!!

    Less than impressed!

  13. Clowie – Poppy wants to know if you ever had to get a bath after gardening. Today she made a nice sized mud hole in the peony garden while I was fiddling with a soaker hose and not paying attention to her. Wow, she was sore with me for sometime after the bath. 😦

    • Frequently! Luckily I don’t mind having a bath – two of my favourite things are attention and water. The only thing I don’t like is the smell of the shampoo.
Also, if the weather is reasonable, they just hose me down after a muddy walk – I love it!

      • Maybe we can change Poppy’s attitude. She loves getting wet on her own terms, but baths are too formal. “D

        • I wasn’t very enthusiastic about it when I was a young puppy because I didn’t like standing still. It was very difficult to do, as I wanted to go and play. It was the same with being brushed, I found that boring but now I enjoy it.

          • Clowie,

I’m happy to hear this. My previous dogs came to me at 1 – 4 yrs old. It’s been very long since I had a puppy. In fact I was a child, so I really don’t know what to expect! Your insights from “puppyhood” are reassuring. 😀

            Thanks,
            Nanina

          • Thank you, I’m glad if my little tales help. I’ve left a comment on your blog too.

  14. I have given you the ‘Pick of the LItter’ award for your lovely blogging: http://dogdaz.com/

  15. Well that was fun! Grass and soil flying everywhere…some distant cries of what I can only assume were your bipeds shrieks of delight as I dug my through your blog page…all the way through the impressively vast array of comments…to arrive here!! The ground on your blog page was so lovely and cool and soft…the hole to the comment box was wonderfully easy to dig!! Don’t give up on your digging 🙂 We can have a competition to see who can dig deepest…your bipeds will love the entertainment and we can improve your rabbit warren so you attract lovely juicy tasty rabbits for them to cook for you!! And with 2 of us digging the holes won’t get filled in!!! Dig that!! 🙂

    • Woof woof! It sounds as though you enjoyed that. The bipeds don’t seem to understand the wonderful feel of the earth under your paws. I think we could do some amazing landscaping, working together!

      • We could set up business together! Think that should be in Oz though…much better weather and nice dry, soft earth for digging in the sun 😉 Bipeds the world over would be crying out for our landscaping services! We could do a sponsored dig and raise funds for animal rescue shelters 🙂

        • I think we could do some amazing landscaping together and a sponsored dig would be such fun!

          • Your bipeds would be so proud of you! I’m sure they would be happy to sponsor you if you were digging for GOLD lol! You could do a sponsored chew too 🙂 In the bipeds favourite room! Think how much they’d sponsor you NOT to chew their favourite treasures!! 🙂

          • You’re coming up with some really good ideas for me to chew over!

  16. Our Australian Shepherd isn’t much of a digger. One time, however, she was sitting in the yard, watching me plant some flowers and decided to dig the next hole for me! I was amazed that she picked the correct spot and everything. Sadly, I had to dissuade her, just in case she returned to dig them up later.

    Happy memories. 🙂

  17. Chancy and Mumsy

Hi, Clowie I am so happy to meet another gardner. I have started several projects that I never got to finish. Mumsy seems to have different gardening ideas than I do. Thank you for coming by and following our blog. We sure do like your blog and we will be following your also. Happy gardening! Hugs and nose kisses Chancy

  18. Ha, I do believe that is ‘totally’ what goes on in their heads. So cute!

  19. […] you’ve read “Gardening Part 1 – Digging my way to Oz” , you’ll remember that I have green paws! I told you all about the work I was doing on the […]

  20. Greetings to a kindred spirt. Me and Nellie love to dig. For some reason mummy does not appreciate our efforts. She complains about dirt flying everywhere, especially all over Nellie. You can read about it. Love Nellie and Jasper from sunny Mangamahu, New Zealand
